Portion cost from a case calculator.

Divide a case price by the usable number of portions it provides.

Last checked

Starting values are an illustrative example. Replace them with your own figures.

Ingredient cost per portion$0.96

How the calculation works

Use net product weight, excluding packaging. Portion size is measured after the preparation represented by the yield input. If the case is already peeled or trimmed, use a matching yield.

Formula: Case price × portion grams ÷ (case kg × 1,000 × yield ÷ 100).

Worked example

The starting inputs are illustrative assumptions: Case price ($): 48; Case weight (kg): 10; Edible yield (%): 80; Edible portion size (g): 160. They produce 0.96$. These inputs are editable and are not market prices or industry benchmarks.

Use the result

Count partial portions deliberately. The arithmetic cost assumes the usable remainder can be used; if your operation discards it, include that loss.

Keep the period, unit and currency consistent across the inputs. A calculator cannot identify a missing cost from the figures you provide. Retain an invoice or stock-count record for the inputs, and use the result as a check on your operating decision.
